Desktop doesn’t become main window after popup in IE7

Updated on September 12, 2008

Symptom

When using Developer portal functionality such as the Find Rules tool, another window may pop up containing a selection of rules that match the search criteria. Details of the user interaction differ between Internet Explorer 6 and 7; minor retraining is necessary.

When the developer is using Internet Explorer 6, clicking one of these rules in the pop-up window opens that rule on the desktop.  At this point, the desktop becomes the main or “top” window – it “comes into focus” for the user.

Solution

Workaround

In IE 7, if there is only one tab open, and Process Commander is accessed on that tab, the functionality of features like Find Rules remains mostly the same – the pop-up window will still appear with the “found” rules.  It is still possible to click one of these rules in the pop-up and have that rule open on the desktop; however, the desktop does not come into focus.  The pop-up window will remain the “top” window, and the user must minimize or close the pop-up to see the opened rule on the Process Commander desktop.

If there are several tabs open in IE 7, the tabs also do not come into focus; after clicking the “found” rule in the pop-up window, the user must know to click the appropriate tab for Process Commander to find the desktop.  If the tab is hidden, no signal is visible to the user that the “found” rule has been opened on the desktop.
