PDF file rendering scenarios

When you create PDF files from a report, or from a section by using the HTMLtoPDF activity or the Create PDF smart shape in a case type, the system can render PDF output in a number of ways, depending on the styling options that you configure. By default, the system converts the section or report to PDF based on the styling that is provided in the containing harness, and you can can also override the default styling.

The styling that is applied to the PDF file is determined by the following settings:

  • The styles that are defined on the portal skin in which you render the PDF file.
  • The pyReport_ExportToPDFStyles style sheet when you select the Ignore Application skin check box in report definitions. When you select this check box, you remove styles that were applied by the application skin in report definitions when you export the report to PDF. For more information, see Report Definition: Data Access tab. (update X-ref to live help when available)
  • The pyUseCompactStylesforPDF compact style sheet, which you can use when you create PDF files by using the Create PDF smart shape to capture information in a screen (section) or when you use the HTMLtoPDF activity. Use this style sheet to more quickly create PDF files and render certain elements such as headings and inline grid tables correctly. To enable this setting, set the UseCompactStylesforPDF Dynamic System Setting to true. For more information, see Creating PDF files by using a compact style sheet.

PDF rendering behavior is determined by which settings are applied. When you apply a new style, it takes precedence over an existing setting. The following table describes these scenarios:
