Troubleshooting: CONFLICT directories indicate ActiveX file conflicts when one workstation accesses multiple systems

Updated on May 7, 2019

Summary

When you're using a single workstation to connect to two Process Commander systems of different versions (for example, 4.2SP1 in Production and 4.2SP6 in Development) a conflict may occur between ActiveX control versions.

When this occurs, the errors appear as workstation directories named CONFLICT.n, where n is a number, for example, CONFLICT.1. These directories appear in Windows/Downloaded Program Files.

Note: Though the name CONFLICT.n contains a dot suffix, this is a directory, not a file name.

Suggested Approach

There are several solutions to this issue:

  • Clear the browser OCX cache after using one Process Commander version and before using the other version.
  • Delete the CONFLICT directories.
  • Use Internet Explorer 4 or higher which supports multiple Occache folders.

Clear the browser cache

After you use one version, clear the browser cache before connecting the other version. This removes all the ActiveX files from the cache and they are reloaded when you initiate the other Process Commander version.

NOTE: If the ActiveX files are not automatically downloaded when you access the second Process Commander version, you can re-install the OCX files from OCXInstaller.zip file, found in the ResourceKit folder in the Process Commander installation media.

Delete the CONFLICT directories

To delete any CONFLICT directories, access Windows/Download Program Files directory using Windows Explorer and delete the appropriate directories.

Restart your computer after deleting the directories.

Multiple OCcache folders

Internet Explorer versions 4 and higher support multiple Occache folders. By default, the Occache folders are stored in the Windows\Downloaded Program Files or Winnt\Downloaded Program Files directories.

When you have multiple OCcache folders, the application will retrieves the correct version of the ActiveX files.

If you upgraded to IE 4 from Internet Explorer 3.x, both an Occache and Downloaded Program Files folder may exist. In this case, all new ActiveX controls are installed in the Downloaded Program Files folder, but previously installed ActiveX controls still work in the Occache folder.

When you open the Occache or Downloaded Program Files folder in Windows Explorer, Windows NT Explorer, or My Computer, all ActiveX controls are displayed regardless of the folder in which the ActiveX control files are located.
