Troubleshooting: Java Hotspot 64-bit Server VM error prevents Process Commander startup (WebSphere, Solaris)

Updated on October 2, 2015

IBM WebSphere Application Server Versions 6.1.0.25 through 6.1.0.29 running on the Solaris 10 platform include the Oracle (Sun) JVM. Problems starting Process Commander on affected versions of WebSphere Application Server stem from a known Oracle (Sun) JVM defect in the 64-bit Hotspot Just In Time (JIT) compiler.

You are running Process Commander on Solaris 10 with one of the following versions of IBM WebSphere Application Server:

  • 6.1.0.25
  • 6.1.0.27
  • 6.1.0.29

Process Commander fails to start. Internal errors such as those illustrated in the examples indicate that the 64-bit Oracle (Sun) Hotspot JIT compiler defect is causing the application server to fail each time you start it.

For IBM WebSphere Application Server Versions 6.1.0.25, 6.1.0.27, and 6.1.0.29 for the Solaris 10 platform, IBM PMR 61472,7TD,000 is tracking the resolution of this defect.

Examples

The following examples provide excerpts of the internal errors that you might encounter. In the error log text, the S Y S T E M information section identifies the Java Hotspot Virtual Machine version used by the application server:

  • WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1.0.25

vm_info: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (1.5.0_17-b04)

  • WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1.0.27

vm_info: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (1.5.0_19-b02)

  • WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1.0.29

vm_info: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (1.5.0_22-b03)

Solution

If your operating system is Solaris 10, do not run Process Commander on WebSphere Application Server 6.1.0.25, 6.1.0.27, or 6.1.0.29. Use WebSphere Application Server 6.1.0.23.

Watch for information regarding IBM’s resolution of PMR 61472,7TD,000 and confirmation that Process Commander on WebSphere Application Server 6.1.0.25, 6.1.0.27, and 6.1.0.29 runs successfully on Solaris 10.
