'Add Item' standard icon isn't shown in IE, works fine in Chrome

Summary
An Icon control field is configured to use 'Add Item' Standard Icon for display.
However this icon is not shown at all in Internet Explorer and works perfectly in other browsers (such as Chrome).
Error Messages

Steps to Reproduce
Step 1: Launch Portal.
Step 2: Click on availability.
Step 3 : Check if (+) plus icon is visible under Unavailable From – To Grid.
Root Cause
This issue happens only in environments where applications are being rendered in Enterprise mode in Internet Explorer.
When switching to Standards mode the issue is not to be seen. Pega 7 applications are rendered in HTML5 document mode and for all its features to work appropriately, Standards mode has to be used in Internet Explorer.
Resolution
The solution is to have the Pega application run in Standards mode.
