During database failover Search stops working

When testing a disaster recovery scenario where half of all nodes were brought down, indexing and search no longer worked but all other functionality was fine. All indexes on the Search landing page have index size listed as -0.01.

After bringing up all the nodes the indexing is fine and works as expected.

Steps to Reproduce

Bring down half ratio of the nodes existing in the user environment and use Search option.

Root Cause

A defect or configuration issue in the operating environment.

In order for elasticsearch to function, more than half of all indexing host nodes listed on the Search landing page must be online.
Technically, the number of indexing host nodes online must be greater than or equal to ((Total number of indexing host nodes online / 2) + 1).

In this case with four nodes listed as indexing host nodes, at least three nodes must be online.

Perform the following local-change:

While it may not be possible to bring up the offline nodes to address the issue, the Search landing page can be adjusted. This will require elasticsearch to be 'restarted', which entails removing all indexing host nodes from the Search landing page.
  1. Remove all indexing host nodes from the Search landing page.
  2. Submit the change.
  3. Add only online indexing host nodes to the Search landing page.
  4. Submit the change.
