Incorrect rule count while using Validate tool

SA-9972

Summary

On using the Validate tool to validate the rules in a single ruleset, the output of the tool reports fewer rules being processed than that are actually present in the ruleset. Rule count does not match the rule count of the Ruleset.

Error Messages

Not Applicable.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Start the validate tool from Designer Studio / Application / Tools / Validation.
2. Select "Validate a Ruleset" from the top radio button.
3. Select the relevant Ruleset and click "Start Validation".
4. Note the number next to "Total Rules" and "Processed Rules" when the validation completes.

Root Cause

The ruleset that user is subjecting to validation had multiple versions. Some rules in earlier versions were masked by rules in later versions. Some rules had visibility of Withdrawn and “Not available”.

Resolution

The explanation for this behavior is as follows: If the validation tool uses Rule Resolution to determine the rules that need to be subject to validation, then both of the about sets of rules would be excluded. Once these sets of rules are excluded from the overall number of rules in the ruleset, the number of rules remaining matches the “Total Rules” found by Validation.
