Installation in a database failover environment

SA-15544

Summary

The SQL Server database will be using SQL failover clustering with 2 database nodes.
  • When editing setupDatabase, should - the detailed primary database node be specified or the availability group name?
  • Does the same apply anywhere the database server name is to be specified?

Resolution

In a database failover architecture, if one of the database servers fails, the database manager makes this determination and continues without use of the failed server until the failed server has recovered and has resynced with the database. For this to occur without intervention, the database recovery group name should be specified when referencing the database.

A specific database node should be referenced only when there is a need to ensure access to that node. This is usually performed during DBA work and is normally not used by Pega application.

Since different database vendors have implemented failover using slightly different architectures and techniques, the recommendation is to consult the DBA team responsible for the database to understand how the database will be configured and how it is to be referenced.
