Error Messages

Not  Applicable

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Launch  a screen using the Accessibility portal.
  2. Submit  the form without filling the details. JAWS screen reader reads the error message twice.

Root Cause

Issue with  JAWS 14.

Resolution

Here’s the explanation for the reported behavior:

When an element has role=alert, JAWS reads the content of the element if any of the below occurs apart from reading,
  • Creating a new element
  • Adding a role attribute with a value of alert
  • Creating text content
  • Appending the text content to the created element
  • Changing the innerHTML of an element
  • Changing the display attribute on an element
Creating an element and changing the display attribute both occur. Hence, JAWS reads the message twice.

Two ERRORTABLE DIVs are present, one on the body and the other in the harness. Both the DIVs are displayed. However, the one in the harness is hidden later. Both have role=alert on them JAWS reads them both. It tends to read out hidden elements as well.
