Low performance on producution environment

SA-31260

Summary

A systems administrator has observed low performance in a four node PRPC implementation.

Further, user has complained of memory problems that seem to be causing the performance problems.

Error Messages

No error messages are displayed on screen; no applicable error messages were found in the Pega logfiles.

However, in the Tomcat logs, the Java outofmemory error was observed:

LOGFILE: catalina_node3.out (Tomcat instance logfile)
LINES: 938988

line 272,801 column 405 - Warning: <tr> dropping value "oddRow cellCont" for repeated attribute "class"
line 272,801 column 490 - Warning: <td> dropping value "dataValueRead gridCell ellipsis" for repeated attribute "class"
line 272,801 column 663 - Warning: <script> lacks "type" attribute
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
Dumping heap to /<APPNAME>/tomcat/node1/logs/java_pid14857.hprof ...
Heap dump file created [5248745346 bytes in 165.026 secs]

Steps to Reproduce

Unknown.  No specific steps were identified in testing that would cause this issue.

However, the specific business logic causing this issue was identified from an analysis of the Pega ALERT log.

Root Cause

The root cause was found to be related to the GetWorkAttach functionality defined in the business logic: the business logic appeared to be retrieving large numbers of attachments to satisfy a business request, which consumed the available PRPC heap space.

Resolution

System administrator is advised to contact their Pega developers, and review the business logic.

Also determine if a select Criteria was not narrow enough and thereby bringing back more data than needed.
