NPE thrown after calling remove post upgrade

Summary
User mentioned that their application was recently upgraded from Pega 7.1.9 to Pega 7.2.2.
The java step containing the code below was working fine in Pega 7.1.9, post-upgrade it is now throwing a NullPointerException:
String CurrPageRef = tools.getStepPage().getReference();
tools.getStepPage().remove(CurrPageRef);

Steps to Reproduce
The steps to reproduce the issue is not known.
Root Cause
During copy when user validates the back link of a property, user is assuming that the forward link of the cached reference property which is referring to this property always has the reference link. In User scenario the link is broken causing NPE.
Resolution
Apply HFix-35008.
