Number of DB connections shows as zero in SMA

SA-11908

Summary

The number of database connections shown on the SMA on the Advanced -> Database Management screen is zero, which cannot be correct as the node is active.

Resolution

The explanation for this behavior is as follows:

The way we count DB connections in Pega 7 has changed - it is actually a more accurate count now. We allow the application server to manage connections for us, and the only time that Pega actually handles a database connection is when it is actively using it. When it is done, it returns the connection to the application server and no longer tracks it. Even with a requestor logged in, it is not necessarily actively making a database transfer. Thus, if there are no database transactions in-flight at the time the SMA is checked the value for this counter can, correctly, be zero.
