RCA: Memory is being used fast and crashing applications

A systems administrator has observed generally poor performance, and an occasional out-of-memory error condition. SA has requested assistance to identify the root cause.

Error Messages

No error messages are displayed on the screen; a specific out-of-memory error was not found in the Pega logfiles (pega log or Pega ALERT log).

Steps to Reproduce

Unknown. No specific steps were found to reproduce the issue.

Root Cause

Insight into the logs revealed that the environment was not configured correctly. The environment was running on a 64bit JVM, but configured to use less than 1GB of memory. Further analysis revealed that no software updates had been applied to the JVM/Java Container - the JVM version information indicated that the JVM was over five years old.

Advised SA to perform multiple steps:

1) Update their Java Container and JVM to the latest versions (to FIRST mitigate any possible Security implications)
2) Update the JVM Xmx parameter, and increase to a minimum of 4GB of heap space as instructed in the PRPC installation guide.
