Unable to run Pega 7.1.7 with IBM JRE version 8

Summary
An existing installation of Tomcat 7, IBM SDK/JRE 7, PRPC 7.1.7 is being updated to run on Tomcat 8 with IBM SDK/JRE 8. Errors result.
Error Messages
ERROR - Error compiling: com/pegarules/generated/pega_gadgets_pxdatamanipulate; see class's compile log file.
Steps to Reproduce
Attempt to run 7.1.7 on IBM JRE 8.
Root Cause
The configuration is explicitly not supported. Java 8 will not work with any versions of Pega 7 prior to 7.1.8. To work with Java 8, compiler changes were required, which are not present in prior versions.
Resolution
Use Java Runtime Environment 7 for Pega 7.1.7 and below, per Page 11 of the Pega 7 platform Support Guide (https://pdn.pega.com/documents/platform-support-guide)
