Deprecation of Microsoft ActiveX controls in Pega Platform

Updated on September 10, 2021

Beginning with Pega Platform™ 7.3, ActiveX controls in all versions of Pega Platform are deprecated, and support for issues with ActiveX is limited. For increased performance, better security, and fewer compatibility issues, migrate to HTML5-based solutions.

In addition, ActiveX is no longer supported in the Microsoft Edge browser on Windows 10, and there are compatibility issues with using ActiveX controls on Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 365.

Support for ActiveX will be provided on an exception basis if you have not upgraded to Windows 10 or Office 365 and are encountering ActiveX issues. However, the following compatibility issues cannot be addressed:

  • The WordTextArea control when more than one control is on your Pega application and you are using Internet Explorer 11
  • Screen capture on Windows 10
  • Microsoft Word merge by using ActiveX
  • Editing in Microsoft Excel using open authoring in Windows 10

You can use the following alternative tools for ActiveX-based Pega Platform features:

  • For screen captures, use SnagIt, GreenShot, or ScreenCapture. Additionally, the Chrome Web Store offers a variety of tools that you can use.
  • For Microsoft Word document merge, use one of the following tools:
    • The Pega DocuSign connector, which generates dynamic documents, collects signatures, and automatically attaches copies to your case.
    • The Generate document smart shape that you can add to your case life cycle to generate documents based on a template and attach content to your case.
  • For Microsoft Outlook integration, go to the Microsoft website for more information about APIs that you can use with Office 365 Outlook.

For more information, see Generating case documents and Generating a document smart shape.
