E-mail listeners process only those messages that have not yet been retrieved, or read. If an e-mail listener cannot process an e-mail message because something is wrong with it — the message is invalid in some way — the listener marks the message as "seen." That way the listener doesn't waste time trying to process an invalid message again the next time it checks the inbox.
However, the POP3 protocol does not support the "seen" attribute. For this reason, it is best practice to configure e-mail servers to use the IMAP protocol when you can, as IMAP supports the "seen" attribute.
