Purpose

Create a binary file rule to include a graphics file, such as an image (including GIF, JPG, or PNG files) or other non-text files in your application as a rule. This rule type provides the security, inheritance versioning, and deployment benefits of rule resolution to a file.

Binary file rules can also hold non-image text files, including ActiveX controls (OCX file type), Windows libraries (DLL file type), Adobe Flash files (SWF file type), or Adobe PDF documents (PDF file type).

Some binary file rules contain a Visio stencil. For technical reasons, VSS files are stored with "biw" as the final key part.

Where referenced

Any rules that contain HTML, such as harness, section, and correspondence rules, can reference binary file rules.

Access

Use the Rules Explorer to list all binary file rules available to you. Use the Image Library gadget (using > User Interface > Tools > Image Library) to view and search the binary file rules of image file types such as GIF, JPG, and PNG.
