Instantiating a child case when a parent case is created

You can use automatic instantiation to create a child case when a parent case is created. By allowing your application to monitor case status and events, you simplify case creation for case workers.

  1. Open a child case type in Case Designer.

Caution: Ensure that you open the correct version of your case type if it has multiple parent case types. The instantiation details for a child case type are unique to each parent case type.

  2. On the Settings tab, click Instantiation.

  3. Select the Automatically by system when check box.

  4. Click Parent case starts.

  5. Optional: In the Allow only when field, press the Down Arrow key and select the name of a when condition to control when a child case is created.

Alternatively, you can enter a unique name and click the Open icon to create a new when condition.

  6. Click Save.

At run time, an instance of your child case type is created when your application detects that a parent case is created and the provided when condition returns a true value.

Tip: Open the Case Type form of the parent case type to access more options, such as the maximum number of child cases that can be instantiated in the system.
