  Completing the Type tab

Select a type for the chart in the left panel. The right panel shows subtypes of the selected type.

Selection

Description

Type

Select a type. For examples, review the small images or these definitions: area chart, bar chart, column chart, line chart, and pie chart.

Subtype

Select a subtype for the selected type.

For bars and column charts the subtypes are:GATZH 3/30/2010

  • Clustered — Groups bars or columns by category. Not used with area charts. This is the default.
  • Overlaid — Displays multiple bars (or columns or areas) on top of each other, grouped by category, with the series specified last on top.
  • Stacked — Stacks multiple bars (or columns or areas) end-to-end, grouped by category. Each bar represents the cumulative value of the values below.
  • 100% — Stacks bars (or columns or areas) end-to-end, adding to 100%. Each bar represents a percentage of the sum of values of a category.

For area charts, the subtypes are:

  • Overlaid — Displays multiple bars (or columns or areas) on top of each other, grouped by category, with the series specified last on top.  This is the default.

For a pie chart, the subtypes are:

  • Normal — Contiguous pie slices.
  • Exploded — Pie slices not adjacent.
  • Doughnut — A wheel or pie with a central hole.

For a line chart, the subtypes are:

  • Segment — Line segments connect data points.
  • Step — Steps connect data points.
  • Horizontal — Horizontal bands surround data points.
  • Vertical — Vertical bands surround data points.
  • Curve — Smooth curves connect data points.
  • ReverseStep — Similar to step but data points connect right-to-left.

  Completing the Data tab

Complete the Data tab to indicate which summarized column to display in the chart and which group by column values to display along the sides of the chart.

A summarized column contains data that is summarized using one of the following built-in functions: COUNT(), SUM(), AVG(), MIN(), and MAX()

Examples include: counts of class instances (or record counts), total dollar amounts, average elapsed time between the entering and resolution of a work item, the most recent (maximum) date value, the earliest (minimum) date value.

All non-summarized columns on the report are considered group by columns, since the summarized data is grouped by, or broken out by, these other columns.

Bar, Column, Area, and Line charts arrange their chart elements within a rectangular grid in which, by default, summarized column values are indicated by the values along one axis (or side) of the chart (also known as the summarized column axis), and group by column values are displayed along another axis (or side) of the chart (also known as the group by column axis).

Field

Description

Group by Columns

For pie charts, select a single group by column. For bar, column, area, and line charts, select one or two group by columns whose values provide the names of the wedges in ToolTips and legends. The selections use the column headings defined for these columns on the Design tab.GATZH 3/30/2010

Summarized Columns

Select a single summarized column. The selections use the column headings defined for these columns on the Design tab.

Rotate Axes

Optional. For bar, column, area, and line charts, selecting this option rotates the axes for the chart so that the horizontal axis becomes the vertical axis, and vice versa.

Limit to top

Optional. Enter a value to reduce the number of graph elements to a small set that users can more easily interpret. The default is no limit.

After sorting by largest category first, the system combines elements that rank lower than the limit into a single chart element. For example, if you limit to the top 5 values, the chart contains the top 5 values plus a 6th value representing the sum of all values not in the top 5.GATZH 3/30/2010

of

Optional.  For bar, column, area, and line charts, if you chose a numeric limit in the Limit to top field, and you selected more than one group by column to chart, identify which summarized column you want the top n elements of.

  Completing the Axes tab

This tab is only available for bar, column, area, and line charts.  Complete these fields to control the location and appearance of the axes.

Field

Description

Group By Column Axis
Show Grid Lines

Select to include grid lines for the axis. If not selected, only tick marks appear.

Show Labels

Select to label points on the axis with values.

Placement

For a bar chart, select Left or Right as the location of the axis.

For column, line, and area charts, select Bottom or Top as the location of the axis.

Scale

For line charts. Select Category or DateTime to identify the elements of the axis.

For other chart types, only Category is used.

Summarized Column Axis
Show Grid Lines

Select to include grid lines for the axis. If not selected, only tick marks appear.

Show Labels

Select to label points on the axis.

Placement

For column, line, and area charts, select Left or Right as the location of the axis.

For bar charts, select Bottom or Top as the location of the axis.

  Completing the Options tab

Select options to control other chart elements and to allow users to interact with the chart.

Field

Description

Customize Settings
Chart Size

Select Small (300x200px), Medium (500x300px, or 350x300px for pie charts), Large (700x400px, or 400x300px for pie charts), or Custom. If you choose Custom, enter a width and height in pixels.

Show Data Tips

Select to display data points in ToolTip text.

Show Maximize Button

Select to include a maximize button (Maximize) that allows users of this interactive chart to open the chart in a new window at full screen size.

Show Data Button

Select to include a Show Data button (Maximize) that allows users to view the summary view data in tabular, non-chart format. This button is functional only when the chart is produced by the chart JSP tag.

If the Show Data Button box is selected, the summary view data will open in a new window rather than in the current window.

Maximum Column/Bar Width

For column and bar charts only.

Choose a value between 0.1 and 1 to restrict the size of the largest column (or bar) as a fraction of the overall chart height (or width). For example, if a chart size is 300 pixels high and you select .5, columns in the chart can't be taller than 150 pixels. Accept the default setting of 0 to enforce no restriction.

Series Effect

Use an effect to allow users to interact with the chart. This is most useful for line charts with a DateTime axis and for other charts with many category values. Select an effect:

  • Slide — To redraw the chart interactively by moving along values of the data axis.
  • Zoom — To grow or shrink a segment of the chart to make detail more visible or less visible.
  • Interpolate — For line and area graphs, to convert the image gradually.

Effects are not available for the Stacked and 100% chart subtypes.

Line Weight in Pixels

For line charts. Select to control the width of lines in pixels.

Drop Shadow Filter

For line charts. Select to apply a drop shadow to lines.

Legend
Show Legend

Select to present a legend identifying chart categories and colors for each category. If not selected, other fields in this area of the tab are ignored.

Direction

Select Horizontal or Vertical for the legend presentation.

Placement

Select Top, Left, Bottom or Right for the legend location relative to the chart.
