Summary
Connection closed error occurs when using Oracle 12C R2 and Pega engine fails to start.

Root Cause
A defect or configuration issue in the operating environment.
The errors occurred due to the version of the Oracle driver (12.0.1.0.2) used.
The WebSphere instance was defined to use OJDBC 12.2.0.1.0 which is preferred over the earlier version.
The WebSphere instance had two definitions of the jdbc\PegaRULES data source. When the correct data source was used the symptom was resolved.
Resolution
Make the following change to the operating environment:
Use OJDBC 12.2.0.1.0.
