Export to Excel in RD displays warning while opening xls file

SA-67147

Summary

Excel reports from a report browser are not saved in the .xlsx format. In the Pega out-of-the-box rule, the format is xls and the format is fetched from the pzViewExcelData activity.
When opening an XLS file, error occurs on clicking the Export to Excel option in the report definition.

Error Messages

The File could be corrupted or unsafe.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Run any report definition.
  2. Export it to Excel.

Root Cause

This behavior is as per Pega product design.

Resolution

Here’s the explanation for the reported behavior:

The exported file is not a true Excel file. The warning message that displays can be ignored (the file opens on clicking Yes). The message is generated because the actual file format exported is HTML. However, the .xls extension ensures that Microsoft Excel opens the exported file.

From Pega 7.3.1 onwards, the Excel files are saved with a .xlsx and hence this functionality works correctly.
