Build your first app in 90 minutes! Introducing a new Low-code Maker mission on Pega Academy

Timothy Harfield, 3 minute read

In just 60 – 90 minutes, the new Low-code Maker Mission on Pega Academy teaches new citizen developers everything they need to know to create a simple departmental app.

Citizen development is a broad category that essentially describes any kind of low-code work that happens outside of IT.  Pega’s low-code factory approach to citizen development specifically describes how organizations can leverage a combination of technology and best practices to empower individuals to create simple applications that benefit themselves as much as those around them.  Consider: an HR manager who automates a workflow to help them manage onboarding tasks; a sales manager who wants to track completion of specific tasks at certain phases in the sale cycle; a marketing manager who needs a way to manage requests outside of their email inbox.

The thing about this kind of citizen developer (known at Pega as a “maker”) is that they are not a full-time developer and they do not set out to deliver a service to others.  Instead, they are driven by a desire to get work done and see low-code tools as a way to get that work done better.  According to a recent study from Forrester, users of citizen-developed departmental Pega apps can expect to see a 12% increase in efficiency per app.

A Day in the Life of a Pega Maker

Departmental makers typically don’t have as much interest in building apps as they do in simply improving processes.  Low-code practice managers need to know that the makers for whom they are provisioning environments have the skills necessary to create simple applications. But makers don’t want to have to spend endless hours in training.  They want as little friction between themselves and app creation as possible. The faster they can be trained, the faster they can build an app, and the sooner they and their team can start realizing the value of their efforts.

Enter: the new Low-code Maker mission on Pega Academy.

We’re very excited to announce this new Maker mission,  designed to teach everything you need to know to build a simple application in App Studio. Written with a non-technical audience in mind, the new mission is friendly, engaging, and avoids unnecessary technical vocabulary.  The mission takes only 60-90 minutes to complete and awards each Maker a badge so practice managers can validate maker readiness.  Upon completion of this course, individuals will understand how to:

  • Make a request in Pega App Factory
  • Create a new case type and stages in App Studio
  • Set up users
  • Build their first step
  • Manage approvals
  • Automate email
  • Route work
  • Configure SLAs
  • Make a publishing request through Pega App Factory

All of this is covered in 60-90 minutes, and is easily grasped even if you are new to Pega technology. We encourage all makers to take this mission as part of their low-code Factory onboarding. The mission will also help experienced coaches and practice managers to understand the level of skill that new makers will have when they start to build their first app.  As makers grow in their experience and are ready to take on more sophisticated projects, we encourage them to take the Low-code App Builder mission, followed by Low-code App Builder – Extended.
