Chinese characters export as junk characters on exporting data

SA-63882

Summary

On exporting data from a data type in the Records tab, the Chinese characters export as junk characters on opening the comma-separated values (CSV) file in Excel.

Error Messages

Not Applicable.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Log in to the application
  2. Configure records for a data type containing chinese characters
  3. Click Export and check the downloaded CSV file

Root Cause

This is an expected behaviour. On opening the downloaded CSV in Notepad++ (or any other UTF-8 supported editor), data displays correctly with Chinese characters. However, on opening CSV using Excel, Excel adds some special characters to it.

Resolution

Perform the following local-change:

  1. Open Microsoft Excel
  2. Navigate to the Data tab > From Text

  3. Select the downloaded CSV File and click 'Import'

  4. Set the file origin as 65001: Unicode(UTF-8)

  5. Click Load or Finish
